Bethesda Music Series The Bethesda Music Series (BMS) presents high quality musical performances that raises funds for local charities as part of Bethesda Lutheran Church's social ministry program. This two-fold purpose is accomplished in four to six events annually at Bethesda of a wide range of musical styles, from internationally-known brass and string ensembles, to a university opera ensemble production of "Amahl and the Night Visitors," to gospel music by accomplished New Haven area singers. The BMS committee plans the series and hosts the performances. Tickets are not sold; a free-will offering is taken. The entire offering, which typically includes matching funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, is given to a local social service agency. BMS beneficiaries have a connection to Bethesda, either because they are among those designated by the congregation as benevolence recipients or because a Bethesda member has a personal association with the group. The BMS committee welcomes suggestions for recipients. Performers usually donate their services or receive modest stipends to cover their expenses. These expenses and all other BMS operating costs are met by benefactors and are not part of the congregation's budget. A special request for BMS operating support is made during the congregation's annual Music Sunday, although benefactor contributions are gratefully accepted at any time during the year. Questions about BMS should be directed to the Bethesda Church office at (203) 787-2346 or bethesda@snet.net.
